Frequently asked Questions

Flu and other matters

Flu Season. The flu season is almost upon us and  it is  still a good time to have the flu injection if you have not already done so.The injection is safe and effective and significantly reduces your chances of getting the flu. There is NO vaccination yet against bird flu. Buying Tamiflu or Relenza will NOT prevent you from aquiring it should you be unfortunate enough to come in contact with it. Make an appointment to see the doctor if you have any concerns.

Pap Smears. These should be done at least every 2 years up to age 75 years . Do not let the unavailability of a lady doctor be a reason for putting off your regular PAP test.

Hair Loss. There are several treatments out there and it is best to make an appointment with the doctor to discuss these. It is also a good idea to use this opportunity to discuss the number one issue affecting males CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.

Depression. How long should I take my tablets for? If you are prescribed tablets for your depression you should be on these for AT LEAST 12 months. Do NOT be tempted to stop the tablets when you are feeling better. Numerous studies have shown that relapse is almost guaranteed if you stop the tablets early.

Travel Vaccinations.  Please remember to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT to discuss your vaccination requirements.  Vaccination advice will not be given over the phone as each patient's vaccination requirements may be different depending on a number of variables viz., when they had their last  vaccinations, - did they get the full course, - if so was it given at the correct time intervals,  -are blood tests required to assess vaccination status  etc. etc.

Hormone Replacement Therapy. There are several treatments available. As a general rule HRT should not be taken for longer than 3 & a half years as there is good evidence to suggest that after this time there is increased risk of breast cancer, uterine cancer and there is no benefit against heart disease and prevention of Alzheimer's. Please discuss with your doctor if you have any concerns.
